Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (now Onesti(born November 12, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now One Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in the Olympic competition. Bela Karrolyi is the Romanian gymnastics teacher who was later Comaneci's coach, first discovered Comaneci aged six. Her first competitive event was the National Junior Championships in which she finished 13th in 1969. In the year 1970, she won. Her first competition in the international arena was in 1972, a pre-Olympic junior competition for communist-bloc nations she took home three gold medals and in 1973 and 1974 she became an overall junior champion. Her first senior competition in 1975, she beat Russian Lyudmila Turkishcheva. The five-time European champion who won four golds and a silver. She was the winner of the American Cup in New York City in 1976 and became the first woman in history to complete the backward double salto in dismounting from the uneven bars parallel to each other.
